From the time your baby is born, you want only what is best. While trying to save for the best education may already be on your mind, the baby products you apply to your little one’s tender skin should be a more immediately concern. Even products parents have applied for generations are packed with a concerning laundry list of chemicals including known carcinogens and even formaldehyde. There is, however, a growing movement toward all natural baby products, and there are several good selections on the market today.
This line of products includes soaps, shampoos, lotions, and even diaper rash creams. Founded by Jessica Iclisoy while she was pregnant with her first baby, the company initially started with her quest to find a safe, gentle baby wash. In her own kitchen, she experimented with herbs, plants, oils, and waxes to come up with a great formula, and by 1995, she had introduced it to the world. The brand itself is carried in major stores such as Babies R Us and Target, and celebrity moms like Julia Roberts and Katie Holmes are huge fans of the products. They make certain none of their products include carcinogens or phthalates, and all of their essential oils are third-party tested to ensure purity. They offer almost every product you could need for your baby, and they also have great gift sets with trial sizes of many products if you’re not sure this line is quite right for your baby.
Over half of this company’s line is 100% natural, and many of their other products are on the path to be. All of their products are carefully labeled so you can see which ones are natural and which ones still have some synthetic ingredients. They make lip balm as well as various other body products, but they also have a full line of baby products that are carried in many major big box stores. They make washes and soaps as well as lotions and moisturizers. There’s also a new line of sun care products and diaper rash ointment. All of the products in the line have been tested by pediatricians, and they’re completely free of synthetic fragrances, sulfates, and parabens.
Mothers have turned to Mustela in Europe for years, and many U.S. mothers are now looking to this popular brand as well. They, too, offer a fairly full line of baby care products including soap, diaper rash creams, lotions, and shampoos. All of them are hypoallergenic, as well as free from alcohol, phenoxyethanol, phthalate, and parabens. These products, though, are a bit hard to get, and you may have to visit a specialized store to find the right ones to meet your needs. They’re also available online.
Make Your Own
If you truly want to have complete control over what touches your baby’s skin, there are lots of ways to make your own all-natural baby products. It starts when you decide exactly how natural you want to get. If you want to begin from scratch, you’ll need vegetable shortening or animal fat and lye. Keep in mind that lye can be fairly dangerous, and it’s going to take some careful measuring to get it just right. If you’d rather take a slightly easier route, you may want to go with soap flakes. Many parents use Castile soap because it’s fairly gentle, and it’s made from pure vegetable oils. In addition to the soap flakes, you’ll want distilled water, an essential oil (for scent) and a storage container. Bring your water to a boil, then take it off the heat and let it cool. Stir in your soap flakes (you’ll need the equivalent of a bar of soap), then stir in a drop or two of oil. Stir it all until it’s blended well. Store it in a container with a lid, and you’re ready to go!
